Where the movie differs from the source material is the timeline. The grass moves things, and so walking through it is like walking through and endless maze where the walls kept shifting. If want to immerse yourself in this world, and really put yourself in Cal and Becky’s shoes you need to put your headphones on. Becky mentions to Cal that the woman is being “weird” but despite these red flags the two of them head on in to the ominous tall grass. Waiting for Cal to return Becky also hears a woman’s voice, pleading with Tobin to stop calling for help. It’s the only building in sight yet there are a number of cars from different decades sitting in the parking lot, covered with dust. Becky gets out of the car while Cal parks at the church across the road. He pulls over when she needs to throw up and that’s when they hear a young boy (Tobin) cry out for help. The film opens with a very pregnant Becky and her brother Cal on the road, heading to San Francisco. We’re introduced to the grass very quickly. Directed and screenplay by Vincenzo Natali, In the Tall Grass features a very simple premise, there’s some Tall Grass and it’s spooky – once you go in, you don’t come out. In the Tall Grass is actually a short story and collaboration between King and his son Joe Hill. The most recent adaptation joins King’s other works created for Netflix – 1922 and Gerald’s Game. We’ve already been treated to It: Chapter 2 and now it’s time for another. It’s not Halloween without some Stephen King.
